Text Box: About Us

Silver Creek Presbyterian Church has  a rich history of dedicated ministry to the community.  A picturesque, wood framed church founded in 1875, is nestled creek side at the edge of the woods.  This peaceful, historical setting has attracted visitors for over 125 years.

The church was a local landmark before the community of Lindale ever existed.  Around 1832, Larkin Barnett purchased a 440 acre plantation, which includes the property where the church still stands.

A group of locals, including Barnett’s wife, wanted to organize a church.  Mr. Barnett allowed the group, which called itself the Primitive Baptist Church, to erect a building at the site “lying in the bend of Silver Creek” on the road from Rome to Van Wert, now known as Rockmart.  The road ran immediately by the front door of the church and the creek had to be forded twice, once before the road reached the church and once after.

On March 8, 1862 just before his death, Mr. Barnett divided the plantation among his heirs.  Georgia B. Whitehead, Barnett’s daughter, was deeded the section of the plantation on which our church stands with the stipulation that “they or their successors shall continue to hold church meetings at that place.”

Meanwhile, the Primitive Baptist Church was given property in the Wax Community, abandoning the site at Silver Creek in 1867.  In 1875 an evangelist of Cherokee Presbytery visited Silver Creek and was greeted with such enthusiasm, then on August 31, 1875, he received and enrolled thirteen members into Silver Creek Presbyterian Church.   Later that year, Mrs. Whitehead donated the present property to the ruling elders.  The present sanctuary was erected and the dedicatory sermon was preached September 29, 1878.

The church building was turned from facing south to facing east and an annex added in 1950.  In 1979, the brick walkway and steeple were added.

An annual homecoming event in October provides an opportunity for church friends and family to enjoy worship and fellowship in the celebration of the heritage of the church.
